ARCHITECTURENorth Hill embodies many architectural styles - from
the gingerbread Victorian to the stately Federal home. There are more
than 300 beautiful homes, most primarily built between 1895 and 1941.
Almost every home style from the late 19th to modern day can be found
nestled under magnificent oak trees and magnolias.
East Hill was one of the first suburbs of Pensacola. Settlers of
Pensacola found new prosperity in the lucrative lumber and import
industries. These founding families moved "up the hill" to either North
Hill or East Hill.
Many original homes in East Hill in the section south of Cervantes had
views of Pensacola Bay. Residents could see the tall masts of sailing
ships entering and leaving Pensacola Harbor. One East Hill Home has a
true "widow's walk." The owner of the home was a ship's
Captain. His wife would walk many steps up to the round cupola set on
the uppermost portion of the house. The Captain's wife would scan the
horizon looking for her husband's ship entering or leaving the bay.
East Hill is a huge portion of Southern Pensacola. Its boundaries are
Fairfield Avenue to the North, Bayfront Parkway to the South, 9th Avenue
to the West and Scenic Highway to the East. It is the largest "subarea"
of Pensacola and is home to more than 2,000 homes.
East Hill embodies many architectural styles - from the gingerbread
Victorian to the stately Federal home. Almost every home style from the
late 19th to modern day can be found nestled under magnificent oak
trees, pine trees and magnolias. Central to the neighborhood are the
numerous parks. Early urban planners placed parks that encompass one
full city block every 4 or five blocks, so that any house in East Hill
is steps away from a gathering place.
Bayview Park is a sprawling city park on the south eastern edge of East
Hill. It sits on Bayou Texar which feeds into Pensacola Bay. Water
activities and sports events take place at Bayview Park every year. The
park has four lighted tennis courts, a huge playground and numerous
picnic areas that over look the water. There are boat launch facilities,
a community center and a senior center. There is even a fenced in DOG
area - where residents can bring man's best friend for safe, secure
playdates!
WHY LIVE IN EAST HILL?
East Hill is the "new" downtown suburb. Residents have taken pride in
renovating their homes and parks. Newcomers to the area can still find
great deals on homes - both renovated and in need of renovating. Much
has been written about "urban renewal" in America's cities. Look no
further than East Hill to see that renewal in action.
Parts of East Hill are walking distance to many cultural, commercial and
culinary venues. Downtown Pensacola is walking distance away. An
interstate connection is right around the corner, allowing residents to
access other parts of Pensacola in minutes. Pensacola Beach is a mere 15
minute drive. Three major hospitals are minutes away.
